Range Report - Tom's .22LR extractors... ctxt

Well, thought I'd post here now that we're back from Big Sandy and I had a chance to shoot my HK33 .22LR conversion kit with Tom's extractor installed.

As one of the posters here mentioned (Pointman?), I had to grind down the rear spacer protrusions to get it to fit the HK conversion bolt, but going slowly and checking fitment frequently ensured I only took off enough to get a nice, solid attachment when locked down. For those not familiar, the UZI .22LR extractors that Tom's making are nearly identical in dimension to those used in the HK conversion kits for HK33's like mine, and the more common HK91 and G3 .22LR conversion kits out there. One other small modification required was to grind down a slight bevel on the bottom edges of the rounded attachment points at the front; I found that these were slightly too tall to fit into the HK conversion bolt and still move freely, so I again went slowly and trial fit the parts many times.

*** Note: Tom's extractors are specificially meant for the UZI .22LR conversions, so the grinding I did for fitment to the HK conversion kit was of my own experimentation, and not a reflection of fitment to the UZI kit which I have not tried. ***

With that said, once installed, it ran like a top for about 500 rounds until I got bored with it. From a kit that once was dropping fired casings back into the lower and trigger group which required frequent disassembly to clear the fired cases (very annoying), it was now extracting and ejecting with much more force, and I did mag dump after mag dump without any problems at all. The few problems I did have were as a result of the trigger pack getting dirty and causing the sear trip lever to be sluggish, sometimes resulting in the chamber not closing fully, and light hammer strikes. This was somewhat common before adding the extractor to the kit, however.

So, with some minor tinkering, those of you out there with HK .22LR conversion kits now have an excellent source of spare extractor plates which will keep your conversions running. The factory HK extractor plate on my kit lasted about 2,000 rounds before it got weak and started causing problems, and when measured with calipers, it had widened between the 'teeth' at the front considerably, probably not getting a good bite on the case edge during extraction.

I'll be installing one of these extractors in my UZI kit in the near future and fully expect that it will clean up operation and reduce malfunctions in that .22LR kit as well.

With the price of ammo where it is right now, I felt much better blasting mag dumps of .22LR (20 rounds) at Big Sandy vs. doing the same thing with .223. Plus, the kit is just so much fun due to the weight and lack of recoil. I need a drum for this setup. HTH,
